As a professional kitchen designer, I can tell you that proper lighting is too often overlooked in projects. What you typically want above your kitchen table is really good task lighting on a dimmer switch. Most kitchen tables get used not just for eating, but for homework, meal planning, newspaper reading and other tasks. (The dimmer makes romantic dinners and midnight snacks more doable.) I'm not overly confident that a wall sconce will meet those needs, especially if it shines up, not down. I'd suggest using what sounds like a lovely fixture elsewhere in your home, and looking for a hanging light for above your table. JG_Kitchens
